The Way of the Father

Paul's instruction for families in Ephesians 6 flows directly out of the call to "submit to one another out of reverence for Christ" (Eph. 5:21). In a culture where fathers held near-absolute authority, Paul radically redefines leadership by commanding fathers not to provoke their children to anger through harshness, inconsistency, shame, or ego-driven control, but instead to nurture them through the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Children are called to obey and honor their parents, while parents are called to lead like Christ—valuing their children, listening to them, explaining the "why" behind decisions, and shaping their hearts rather than merely demanding outward compliance. Biblical discipline is not about domination or behavior modification alone; it is about lovingly forming character, cultivating wisdom, and reflecting the heart of our heavenly Father, who leads His children with truth, grace, and sacrificial love.
